Matt, requested a write-up about moray eels. There were some really cool stuff about them in the wikipedia. The cool photos below were taken by JP (shared by Matt). Here goes: - 200 species with longest at 13 ft long but usually grows up to 5 ft.
- has poor eyesight and relies on keen sense of smell to ambush prey. Nuctornal
- big teeth are more for tearing than chewing. It has a second set of jaws with teeth in the inside of their throat that brings food inside to be swallowed.
- they dont have scales but their skin is covered with mucus that may have a toxin. This mucus sticks to the side of their burrows that acts to keep the sand together.
- their gills are located far from the mouth. Because of this, morays have to gape to facilitate breathing. Yes, they are not bad tempered. Humihinga lang sila.
- their natural enemies are other morays, groupers and barracudas.
- they are very shy. They will only bite in self-defense. They stay in borrows waiting to ambush prey like fish, mollusks, cephalopods (octopus, squid, etc) and crustaceans (crabs, etc).
Note: All info from Wikipedia. Hi Jp! Great pics!!!
