Calling Gi - our resident fish i.d. expert - please help research this one. Lance: was this at twin rocks or dead palm? i've also photographed these fish in the past but I never knew its name.

Hi matthew! sorry for the late reply. I was out of commission. Before I take a shot at this, let me just start by saying that I am not a fish expert, ok.
So, I'm just guessing here, this looks like a type of fusilier (common name is dalagang bukid). Not sure though. Its best that after the group picture, there's a solo close-up picture so we can see fins, markings for better fish identification. well, just my two cents.
Lance, if you have a solo picture of this fish, you can post it also. Thanks. :-D

Well, I finally saw the fish in person, face to face (nagkatitigan pa nga kami! : , last weekend at Twin Rocks and at Batoc. I think it is not a fusilier. It looks more like a snapper (or sweetlips?). Lance was able to photograph the school of this yellow-tailed fish closer. I'll try to find help on fish ID (promise!). Lance, if you don't mind, can you post your new pics of this fish again? Thanks!

I consulted my friend who is a fish expert (he has been doing fish ID since 2000) and he said this looks like a snapper (Maya-maya in tagalog). He can confirm it's specific name if the picture was closer. I'm so happpy! The mystery has been solved finally! sigh... ;D
Case closed!

You're right on the money, Matt. Bigeye snapper was also his hunch.
He recommended the same website. I clicked on the Philippines then marine fishes. But after the 800th fish, my patience was wearing thin... (actually, I just don't know how to navigate on it). Nevertheless, it is indeed, a very cool website.
