I have received several e-mails, good and bad, about sharks recently. I would like to share my thoughts about the fight for survival of this awesome and often misunderstood apex predator of the sea.
One of the very simple things we can do, is to simply SAY "NO" TO SHARK FIN SOUP!
Why? This delicacy alone, has created an awful industry that kills indiscriminately 73 million sharks every year. This is the industry that is driving these magnificent creatures to the brink of extinction. Shark finning is a cruel and wasteful industry. I do not need to tell you why it is cruel to hack an animal's appendage while it is still alive. Then after removing the fins, 95% of the shark is thrown back to the sea like garbage. Obviously, without their fins, the sharks drown first before facing their already inevitable death. Isn't that freaking ironic.

The second thing we can do is to help correct public opinion about sharks whenever an opportunity presents itself. 95% of shark species are docile and shy. Shark attacks are very rare. On those rare ocassions, it was almost always a case of mistaken identity or they were wrongly provoked. Most reported shark attacks were accidental. They mistake people for their usual prey. There is a higher chance of being killed in a plane crash or struck by lightning than be attacked by a shark. Sharks do not deliberately hunt people for food. Sadly, it is the other way around. People hunt sharks for vanity. Delicacies like sharks fin soup or shark liver oil are the very reasons they are butchered and hacked to death.

Third, give to conservation champions like WWF and Conservation International. Their projects are geared towards mitigating climate change, community grass-root education and lobbying for practicable solutions to make co-existence between man and the rest of God's kingdom (Plantae and Animalia) possible. So let's put our money where our mouth is. In the end, we become the super hero of our super heroes.
Lastlly, spread the word. There are a lot of misinformed idiots out there. SAY NO TO SHARK FINNING. Keep Sharks in the Ocean and out of the Soup.
Peace on earth and good will to all sharks.
Regards,
Gi
