Since Apo Reef is still my no.1 dive experience to date, I can't help but post this article I saw in WWF. And with our fast approaching return trip to this shark haven, it's only fitting to read more about this paradise. ;D
Fast Facts from WWF article and others:
1. Apo Reef remains one of the most significant reef complexes within the Coral Triangle – spanning a whopping 27,469 hectares
2. Sadly, the 1970s brought with it dynamite, cyanide, muro-ami and strobe-fishing. “You would hear 25 to 30 dynamite blasts daily,” notes former DENR Protected Area asst. Superintendent Robert Duquil.
3. In 2007, Apo Reef was declared a ‘no-take zone’, allowing the reef and its residents ample time to recover from years of fishing. Positive spillover effects are now being felt, with fish sizes and yields rising.
4. This is where I saw my 1st shark, 2nd, 3rd, 4th... White tips, Black tips, Grey reef shark, eagle ray... Ang dami!!!
5. This is where I snorkeled with bottlenose dolphins and heard them chirping under water.
6. This is the 1st turtle sanctuary I've been to and where I saw turtle tracks and mounds where they actually laid their eggs.
7. This is where we rescued a bobbin and I did minor surgery to take out fish hooks all over. Then I wished I was a wildlife vet instead.
8. My favorite dive was in Airport 69 - the fish nautical highway. COOLNESS!
9. I dived with super awesome people (Tintin, Angela, James, Jijo, Roland) and real-life super heroes (Robert, Fernan, Doc RED and RTD Ed)
AMAZING!!!
